Quoted from the 1986 Anatolian Times, Volume 20, page 21 I had just returned from a month-long tour of England when I received a call from a gentleman in Miami, Florida. He identified himself as Eugene Abello, and, after much serious consideration, he was in search of an Anatolian from top bloodlines. I referred him to Natalka Czartoryska, top breeder in England who had a new litter of pups born while we were in that country. A Few weeks later 2 puppies arrived at San Francisco Airport, HISAR HAMSIN bound for our backyard and HISAR HARELI, bound for her new home with Eugene in Florida. That was five years ago, and since that time, Eugene Abello has not only become a good friend, he has become a valued breeder and ASDCA Board Member. Eugene Homes Abello was born in Cuba and he emigrated with his family when he was just eight years old. Eugene grew up around dogs as his parents were long-time breeders of Airedales. Eugene dabbled in several breeds before he settled into his own breeding program with Borzoi. He is immensely proud of his several home-bred American and Canadian champions. In 1980, Eugene began researching a new breed, and he was immediately attracted to the Anatolian Shepherd's temperament and athletic ability. After acquiring HISAR HARELI, out of Turkish import GULPERI OF DAGISTAN and KORLUK of POYRAZ, a working dog in Turkey, Eugene acquired HISAR TAKAT, also bred by Natalka Czartoryska. At this year's National Specialty, Eugene handled one of his own breeding, DILIM AY HASAT (HISAR HARELI x HISAR YAKAMOZ) to Best Opposite Sex under AKC judge Charles Herendeen. Eugene is a graduate of the University of Miami with a degree in geography and history, and he continued on with his education by attending graduate school in Germany where his love of languages flourished. Eugene is now fluent in Spanish, French and German, and this fluency led him to work for several years as a legal interpreter for the local court system. About a year ago, Eugene made the decision to change careers, and he is now directing a riding academy specializing in the sport horse. What had been an avocation is now his profession. While he gets his new career going, Eugene is taking a year off from breeding, but he has plans to breed HARELI next year as her offspring are much in demand. Eugene is adament about his philosophy of breeding and his breeding program reflects a commitment to excellence. "I think that tform follows function. To me, temperament is the most important quality followed by physical soundness. I would never breed an animal unless it satisfied both of these qualities. Males can come and go, but I build my bloodlines from the female lines." Eugene has been an active member of the ASDCA Board of Directors, and it was under his leadership that our standard was rewritten. His expertise on dogs has proven to be a tremendous asset to the Anatolian Shepherd Dog Club of America. |
